I have always been encouraged to practice good oral hygiene. From the time I was a child, my mother made sure I brushed daily, flossed and rinsed. She also made sure my siblings and I saw a pediatric dentist regularly. I cannot thank her enough for that because today, I have healthy teeth that are all still intact and in really great condition. Maybe some of that is genetics, but I am pretty sure that most of it is because of encouragement and care from my parents.
Now that I am a parent, I am really trying to establish good oral care for my daughter. She is 3 years old now and has always been fascinated with brushing her teeth. I bought toddler training toothpaste and a fun children's toothbrush for her when she was 2 and began to work with her. She LOVES to brush her teeth. I also find that flossing her teeth gently is very effective as well. She hasn't yet been to a dentist and I really do need to make her an appointment soon. Until then though, I plan to keep helping her and encouraging her to use her toothbrush and brush those pretty teeth!
Recently, I was asked if I would like to participate in the Listerine "Oral Care Challenge". I was more than thrilled to be involved and am very excited about this challenge. The goal with this challenge is to get my family involved and for three weeks we are to brush, floss and rinse twice daily. This sounded like a great idea to me and I happily agreed to participate.
Another reason I wanted to participate in this challenge is because the American Heart Association recently released this very interesting report:
A Swedish study suggests that the type of gum disease in patients may be associated with different types of cardiovascular disease such as heart attack, congestive heart failure and stroke in different ways and to different degrees. While scientists and medical professionals continue to explore the link between the health of your mouth and the health of your body, as a cause-and-effect relationship has not been established, it may make you think twice about your oral hygiene and add another reason to why it’s important that we take care of our mouths and engage in a full oral care routine.
This is important to me as there is history of heart disease in my immediate family and so if I can prevent that in my family (with a good oral care routine), I will do what I can now.
So, I received a special oral care kit to help me and my family complete this challenge. This kit was jam packed full of goodies and makes this challenge all the more fun. I was sent:
Two full sized bottles of Listerine mouthwash for adults
Three full-sized bottles of Listerine Smart Rinse mouthwash for children
Toothbrushes (children's and adults)
Floss (I love these!!!)
A calendar to help keep my little one on track with her brushing.

So, as you can see I am well equipped to jump right in and get started on my challenge! I will post again in three weeks to let you all know how it went and the results of our Listerine "Oral Care Challenge". Please join me again then for an update!
