An EASY Remedy for Stinky Towels!

7:00 AM

Recently, it seems like my bath towels have been smelling funky and almost like mildew. In a word, they STINK. I thought that maybe it was because they weren't being dried thoroughly enough but come to find out, it is because of laundry detergent and softener build up. The build up causes the towels to lose their absorbency over time and thus, they don't dry all the way. Who would have thought that???

So, I went on a mission to find a way to make my stinky towels smell nice again and clean them thoroughly. Buying NEW towels is always an option but it can be expensive to do that. Thankfully, I found that the fix was inexpensive, easy, and took two common household cleaning agents: Vinegar and Baking Soda. Here is what I did to refresh and renew my towels.
First, I washed my towels with hot water and 1 Cup of Distilled White Vinegar. **NO DETERGENT OR SOFTENERS**. Then, I immediately washed them again with hot water and 1/2 Cup of Baking Soda. I was shocked at the amount of soap that was coming out in the rinse water...eeek. I might have to start using less detergent from now on. This process will strip your towels of any residual mildew, detergents and softeners and will leave your towels fluffy and smelling fresh once again. When I dried my towels, I didn't use any softener sheets.  (If your towels still smell funky after doing this then you might need to clean your washing machine. I will be putting up a post on how to do that soon!)
After putting my towels through this process, I have to tell you that it worked WONDERFULLY. I am glad that I found this easy solution to a seemingly un-fixable problem. Sure beats spending money on new towels! Hope this helps you save a few pennies and get your towels smelling great again! :)
